princely states
A princely state in India was a territory ruled by a local ruler under the indirect control of the British Raj, rather than directly by the British colonial authorities. These states, also known as native states, existed alongside the British-administered provinces and occupied roughly two-fifths of the Indian subcontinent. At the time of India's independence in 1947, there were over 500 princely states, which eventually integrated into either India or Pakistan.
